Starting a business from home

Many business uses and even some hobbies, which are undertaken at home, require planning permission. Planning permission is needed to make a “material change of use” of any property. Using your home for anything other than “normal domestic purposes” may be such a “change of use”.

Not all businesses run from home, need planning permission. An example would be a business which does not employ anyone else, which does not result in people/cars/delivery lorries calling at the house, which does not involve a lot of storage, which is not noisy or smelly, which does not involve late night working, and which generally is unlikely to cause disturbance to neighbours.

If you are considering starting a business at home please write to the Council’s Planning Department, giving details of your intended business, and asking whether planning permission would be needed. Alternatively, you can call in to or telephone our offices to discuss your proposal with a “duty planning officer” any weekday from 13:00 to 16:30 Tel: 01633 648009 or write to: Planning Department, Floor 4, County Hall, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, NP44 2WN.
