More than 650 children from across Torfaen enjoyed a fun-filled half-term week, thanks to the efforts of Torfaen Play Service.

The new Food and Wellbeing Camps, designed for children aged 5 to 11 years, were held at various schools and community venues, offering a range of activities aimed at promoting wellbeing and positive mental health.

Children participated in the Daily Mile, St Davids Day activities, arts and crafts workshops, and a variety of indoor and outdoor sports.

One of the highlights of the week was the Scoot FIT sessions, which were delivered to 114 children, teaching safety tips, as well as developing their agility, balance and endurance.

The sessions supported the council’s Active Travel Plan, encouraging more people to walk, scoot, or cycle to destinations across the borough.

It was the first time half-term camps provided healthy, nutritious meals to all children, thanks to Torfaen Catering and extra funding from Food 4 Growth Torfaen.

This initiative will now continue in all future half term camps, ensuring that participants receive wholesome lunches.

In addition, a series of Play and Activities camps were held at Cwmbran Stadium, as well as eight daily Play and Respite sessions specifically for children with disabilities and behavioural needs.

Councillor Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, praised the initiative, stating, “Once again, the half-term play provisions have been a great success.

“A massive thank you to the volunteers and workers who gave up their time this half-term to support the children in their communities, providing them with a fun experience.

“I would like to especially thank the workers who supported children requiring additional assistance. Without their dedication, it would be difficult to offer the same opportunities to all.”

The Play Service are currently mapping out the provisions for a fun packed summer of play. Recruitment for workers and volunteers is open, for more information email torfaenplay@torfaen.gov.uk or visit the play pages on the Torfaen Council website.
