The council has been named as one of the best employers by the Financial Times.

Around 20,000 employees in the UK were surveyed by the FT and Statista for the inaugural edition of this annual list.

Workers were asked to give their opinions on statements about their current employer in areas including working conditions, potential for development and company image.

Torfaen Council is one of only four local authorities to be included in the top 500 list.

Around 4,000 people work for the council, the majority of whom live in the borough.

Recent initiatives to increase diversity at the council include a new school leaver programme and apprenticeship scheme aimed at encouraging younger people to apply for jobs.

Earlier this month, more than 330 students expressed an interest in the council’s career development programme showcased at school career fairs.

Tina Hulme, Head of HR, said: "Our workforce strategy says we will be an employer of choice, with a strong reputation and good people management practice.

"We are an accredited disability confident employer, with an aim to ensure that disabled people and those with long term health conditions have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.

"We have developed a Diverse Minds group, where neurodiverse staff get together to share experiences of neurodivergence in life and work, and we are committed to providing young people with career opportunities."

Lancashire Council is at number 87 in the Financial Times list, with Kent Council at number 331, Glasgow City Council at number 431, and Torfaen Council at number 483.
