Torfaen Foster Carer Carol has thanked her Social Worker who has supported her for the past 18 years.
This World Social Worker Week, Carol has shared how vital the support of her Social Worker Michelle has been.
Carol, who has cared for 25 children over the past 20 years since becoming an approved foster carer for the council, said: “Michelle has supported me for most of my fostering journey by always being available and gets back to me promptly. She has also built trusting relationships with the children in my care.
"Michelle reassures me and guides me when I'm unsure and after my parents passed away, she provided emotional and practical support, allowing me to grieve whilst continuing fostering.”
Foster Wales Torfaen has 15 Social Workers who support over 150 foster carer households and the children and young people in their care.
This support can include practical and emotional support, guidance, learning and development and much more.
Michelle, a Social Worker at Torfaen County Borough Council, who has supported numerous fostering households, said: “It is a privilege to be able to work with foster carers and support them with the children in their care. You become part of their family and get to know everyone. I have watched Carol’s own daughters grow up and become adults throughout my time supporting her.”
The latest Foster Wales ‘Bring Something to the Table’ campaign highlights the expertise and support provided by Social Workers, aiming to encourage more people to consider foster.
Jason O’Brien, Torfaen Council’s Strategic Director for Children and Family Services, said, “Our local authority fostering community, alongside our dedicated Social Workers, have a tremendous impact on our most vulnerable children’s lives.
"Social Workers and foster carers are essential in providing support and stability to children and families in need. Their dedication transforms lives and strengthens communities. To sustain this crucial work, we need more Foster Carers to offer safe and nurturing homes for children and young people within their communities."
Currently, there are around 240 children and young people living in Torfaen foster carer households.
Unfortunately, the demand for foster carers is growing, with new carers needed to meet the needs of children and young people in order to help them thrive.
