Play and Inclusion
Torfaen Play Service has been providing inclusive play support for children with disabilities for over 20 years, catering to the individual needs of approximately 200 children and young people each year. This support model enables access to regular play opportunities, both during term time and holiday times, covering a wide range of disabilities, behaviours, and health needs.
Children and young people accessing the play sessions experience the benefits of maintaining a routine, fostering social and communication skills, alongside a sense of happiness and security. These sessions offer a safe environment and opportunities for confidence-building and enjoyment, aiding children who struggle with routine changes.
The children and young people engage in diverse play activities, fostering independence and communication skills often not available in the home environment, while interacting with peers in a safe and enjoyable space. Families, in turn, find relief and support, enabling parents and carers to receive much needed respite, quality time with other siblings and maintain employment and attend to other responsibilities.
Requests for 1-1 support are received from various sources, including parents and carers, schools, social care, and third-sector agencies, with a referral form aiding in determining the required level of support and suitable venue.
A multi-agency panel, comprising professionals from various sectors, convenes annually in May to discuss play support allocations for the summer, ensuring the identification of appropriate venues and support levels. This collaborative approach allows for tailored summer support packages categorised to meet the specific needs of each child.
There is a range of additional support provided for children and young people to attend.
