Work to transform a derelict piece of land in Pontnewynydd into an inclusive play park has been completed.
This week, children from Osborne Lodge nursery and representatives from Ty Nant Ddu, a day centre for people with disabilities, were at the opening where they had the chance to try out the new play equipment.
The park aims to address the findings of a play sufficiency assessment in 2022, which identified a lack of play provision for children with special needs in the north of the borough.
The new play equipment includes, three multi-play units with a wide slide, two cradle swings, a basket swing, tango swing, seesaw, inclusive roundabout, donkey springy, sensory and musical items, and 3D animals.
The park was made possible by nearly £1.2 million from the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund. This fund also supports various projects across Torfaen, such as enhancing disability access to Blaenavon Flower Park, creating a new multi-games area in Pontnewydd Park, and planning a new outdoor gym in Cwmbran.
Lisa Jones, Osborne Lodge Nursery Manager, said: “The children had a lovely time yesterday trying out the new play equipment.
“It’s great that the park is within walking distance for us – we will definitely be visiting on dry days.
“Getting the children out in the fresh in is brilliant for their well-being and a great way to burn off energy.”
Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Environment, said: “It was lovely seeing the children enjoying the new play area and equipment on Monday.
“This is the first play area in Torfaen to have a tango swing which allows a child and guardian to swing together. Seeing the children’s faces light up when they used this piece of equipment was heartwarming.
“Play areas and parks provide a range of benefits for children, including promoting physical activity, boosting social skills, building self-esteem, developing motor skills and encouraging creativity.”
This project contributes to the council’s County Plan which seeks to support and promote healthier lifestyles in Torfaen to improve mental and physical well-being.
