Two young carers have received a prestigious Gwent High Sheriff Award for going above and beyond in their caring roles.
18-year-old Izzy Pritchard, from Cwmbran, and Tianna Higgins, from Blaenavon, were presented with the award last week at a special ceremony at Riverfront in Newport.
Both girls support their mums who have fibromyalgia – a chronic condition which affects the muscles - by helping with household chores and sorting medication.
Izzy also helps care for her grandad who has Parkinson's Disease, giving her grandmother some much-needed respite, and looks after her younger brother when mum is poorly.
She recently raised funds for Parkinson's through crocheting and helped develop the Torfaen Young Adult Carers group, promoting carers rights through campaigning.
Izzy said: “Being recognised for this award means so much to me. The support I've received from the council has been invaluable in helping me balance my responsibilities and pursue my goals.”
“I’m sure I speak for all young carers in thanking you for the amazing opportunities you have given us!”

As well caring for her mum, Tianna supports her dad who suffered a major stroke, and despite her own challenges, she continues to offer peer support to other young carers through various groups and activities.
Tianna, who also advocates through Torfaen Young Carers Forum, said: "I’m really pleased to have received this award. The young carers support service has allowed me to continue helping others while managing my own care duties."
The High Sheriff Youth Community Awards recognises individuals who have made a significant impact in their communities.
On the night, 23 awards were presented to individuals who excelled in areas such as crime prevention, social inclusion, and community cohesion.
Young carers in Torfaen can now look forward to a Young Carers Action Day at Mount Pleasant Hall, Cwmbran, this March, featuring an evening filled with activities and presentations.
Cllr Richard Clark, the council’s Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "I am incredibly proud of Izzy and Tianna for their dedication and hard work. Their achievements are a testament to the strength and resilience of our young carers.
“I also want to pay tribute to the council's carers support service for their invaluable role in helping to give children the best possible start in life."
Torfaen Young Carers Service provides support to registered young carers through groups, activities, and the development of peer support. They also help young carers access other support services.
A young carer is a person under the age of 18 who provides or intends to provide care for an adult or disabled child.
