Crownbridge extension to officially open

Lynne Neagle, the Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Education, will officially open the extension at Crownbridge School on Friday 21 March.

The ceremony marks the completion of the £12.35 million investment in a 50-place extension to Crownbridge School.

The extension has been built on the current school site in Croesyceiliog and will help meet the increased demand for special education within Torfaen.

The extension is 75% funded by Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning programme.

Bethan Moore, Headteacher at Crownbridge School said: "The extension to the school, known as Mynydd,  includes six new classrooms, a kitchen for pupils to use, course room, office spaces, a hall and a rebound room -  which is a full size floor level trampoline for pupils to undertake therapies.

“There is also a new multi-use games area with external play and learning areas. Outdoor equipment includes a wheelchair accessible roundabout and balance rail and a sunken trampoline.

“As a result, the school has been able to admit new pupils and we are very excited to further develop the extension over the year. It truly provides a first-class facility in which to educate and nurture our children with severe and profound learning difficulties.”

The Leader of Torfaen Council, Cllr Anthony Hunt, said: “Thanks to the Welsh Government’s continued commitment to Torfaen and the council’s ambition to improve our schools, we have completed over £90m worth of investments in our school estate during band A. This includes refurbishing and building multiple new schools and the Torfaen Learning Zone through the support from the Sustainable Communities for Learning programme.

“The extension on Crownbridge represents the first completed scheme in our band B investment which will further improve and expand Torfaen’s learning environments for our young people.  In Torfaen we have seen a sharp growth in demand for special school places and the extension will enable another 50 children to be educated in the fantastic facilities at Crownbridge.

“Next year we have provided an additional £6.7 million increase to the school budget which is an uplift of 8.6% and demonstrates our ongoing prioritisation for education in the borough.”

The opening ceremony starts at 12.15pm on Friday 21 March at Crownbridge School, Turnpike Road, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, NP44 2BJ.
