There are many voluntary groups who help look after our local environment.

Balsam Bashing 

Join the Local Nature Partnership team helping to tackle the invasive non-native Himalayan Balsam. Contact kristen.thobroe@torfaen.gov.uk 

Blaen Bran Community Woodland 

Help maintain the 100acre site by registering as a volunteer or check out the calendar of events. Visit the Blaen Bran Community Woodland website  

Blaenavon World Heritage Site Environmental Volunteers

Bridge 46 to Five Locks Canal Group 

The group holds a volunteer work party once a month, usually on a Sunday morning.  They also arrange events to celebrate the canal and demonstrate its value, as well as campaigning for the canal throughout the year.  For more information, visit the Bridge 46 to Five Locks Canal Group Facebook page 

Friends of Henllys Local Nature Reserve  

Volunteers conserve and enhance Henllys Local Nature Reserve for the benefit of wildlife, residents and visitors. They meet on a regular basis to undertake a variety of conservation activities. Visit the Friends of Henllys LNR Facebook page 

Keep Torfaen Tidy Spring Clean 

Held in March, the council’s litter and fly-tipping officer organises several volunteer litter-picks across Torfaen. For more information, contact oliver.james@torfaen.gov.uk 

Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canal Trust 

The group usually meets on a Saturday and tasks include habitat management and maintenance of the restored lock structures at Ty Coch.  For more information visit mbact.org.uk/volunteering-opportunities 

Pontymoile Task Force  

Hannah Cubie, Community Links Coordinator for Canal and River Trust, runs a group undertaking tasks to look after Pontymoile Basin and canal tow path. Contact Hannah at hannah.cubie@canalrivertrust.org.uk

Torfaen Canal Volunteer Group 

Volunteers meeting monthly in Cwmbran to litter pick and manage vegetation, usually on a Sunday. Contact secretary Hugh Woodford on heatherhugh@hotmail.com

Litter-picking groups 

Find out about community litter-picking and environmental by following the Torfaen Greener Cleaner Volunteers Facebook group. You can also contact the council’s litter and fly-tipping officer Oliver James on oliver.james@torfaen.gov.uk or complete a volunteer registration form

Roving Rangers 

Volunteers can help maintain and manage the borough’s footpaths, local nature reserves and woodlands. To express an interest in becoming a Roving Ranger, email veronika.brannovic@torfaen.gov.uk
